OPEN CALL: Sound poetry

a s l o n g a s i t t a k e s, a sound poetry magazine published by the Atlanta Poets Group, is seeking submissions. We are looking for sound poetry, scores for sound poetry and essays on sound poetry. What is sound poetry? you ask. Good question. It's one of those know it when you see (hear) it kind of things. It's probably not music (thanks Dick Higgins). It might be noise. If you think about a spectrum of possible noise made by the human body (or simulations thereof or substitutions therefor), and at one end of the spectrum is a person reading her poem and at the other end is abstract noise, we're looking for works that fall towards the latter end. We are looking for works in/of/against the tradition(s) of Ball, Schwitters, Henri Chopin, Jandl, Cobbing, The Four Horsemen, Fylkingen Group... hopefully by now you get the idea. We're looking for stuff that will push/redefine the limits. The magazine is web-based. Please send submissions to aslongasittakes@comcast.net in one of the following formats: .mp3, .wav, .wma, or flac. Please query before sending in other formats. If you can't get us the work via email, just send an email and let us know, and we can find another way. We don't know how long it will take to get back to you on your submissions, just be cool. We can't pay you anything for your work. All work that appears in the magazine will be available for download from the magazine's site under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial Share Alike license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/); if you are not comfortable with making your work available in that way, let us know and we can probably work something out.

OPEN CALL: 49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs

From Kurt Gottschalk:
I'm pulling together a performance of John Cage's '49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs' for April 26 (rain date April 27) at 3 p.m. The piece calls for "49 Performer(s) or Listener(s) or Record Maker(s)" at given locations. Play, dance, make a field recording or just sit and listen. I'm going to try to find a place to host written reports, photos and audio recordings after the fact. You can see the addresses at
http://spearmintmusic.blogspot.com/

Once one address is taken, the other two in the section are eliminated. 'Richmond' refers to Staten Island. It'd be great to get people who live on, or are willing to go to, Staten Island, since there are a lot of them. Please feel free to forward this to anyone who you think might be interested. E-mail me with your chosen location (anyone dare try JFK Airport?) and what you'll be doing (instrument, recorder, listener), and I'll update the blog and notify you. I'm also open to suggestions for a good, central place for an after-show meetup.

OPEN CALL: Expo Brighton

Expo is the hub and playground of the experimental music and sound art scene in the UK and beyond. Free and open, this unique platform mobilises a national network of artists and engages with communities from all backgrounds placing sonic art and the people who make it in direct contact with the public. Expo steps out from traditional venues and into spaces that inspire artist and audience alike to reconsider their environments.

Annually relocating, Expo traverses the country and disperses into the locality it arrives in, scattering events, happenings and sounds across the towns and cities it visits, joining together place, people and art. In the spirit of open culture and accessibility Expo has developed a unique social community ethic amongst its many contributing artists and has encouraged highly creative approaches to the staging of new work.

After the success of last year¹s Expo Plymouth the focus now shifts to Expo Brighton for 4-6 July 2008. This weekend of performance, exhibition, presentation, discussion and broadcast will highlight the broadest possible range of approaches and thinking surrounding the sonic arts. We welcome and encourage submissions of all kinds to add to our wide ranging programme. As well as our regular annual call for submissions of all types of sound based work festival partners Radio Reverb and Sonic Arts Network are offering two commission awards for the creation of new work by UK-based artists. The deadline for submissions is the 14 March. For full details on how to submit, and commission proposal guidelines, please see: www.sonicartsnetwork.org

OPEN CALL: Organised Sound

Call for submissions
Volume 14, Number 1
Issue thematic title: Sound Art
Date of Publication: April 2009
Publishers: Cambridge University Press
Issue co-ordinator: Jøran Rudi (joranru@notam.uio.no).

This issue of “Organised Sound” will focus on sound art, a genre of acoustic expression that has a long history in both music and the visual arts. Currently, sound art is becoming a highly dynamic focus for new cross-disciplinary activity. Partially this has to do with young composers' eagerness to search out for new forms of public performance as well as new arenas. This has also led to a new way of looking at the relationship work/audience/performer/ composer.

These conceptually new approaches to music and art can be traced to developments in technology and society in general. It is interesting to note the extent to which this interest has developed outside the established networks and hierarchies of, for example, electroacoustic music.

Themes of interest include:
- conceptually oriented investigations of sound as material
- site- and context-specific art
– the use of soundscape within sound artworks
- process-oriented rather than entity-oriented definition of artworks
- use of audio and music technology whilst departing from the approaches to listening and analysis that are predominant in traditional forms of electroacoustic music.
- new technological means allow artists to pursue new arenas
- convergence in tools -> dissolving lines of distinction

Some questions that are related to the challenges posed by sound art:
How do these changes affect the relationship between concept and craft; what are the implications in terms of critical listening and our ideas of emergent qualities?
What are the implications of the use of different artistic spaces?
Is this a new way of tying art again into society, and if so, which groups in society will benefit? In other words does this represent a renaissance of social art?
Or is this yet another village in society, possessing more or less transparent demarcation lines?
With regard to the established field of electroacoustics: how do we describe the changes in aesthetics?
How can sound art and process-music (for lack of a better term) benefit us in reassessing our field, aesthetically and functionally?

We invite submissions from composers, performers, artists and researchers working in the realm of digital media and sound. Submissions related to the theme are encouraged; however, those that fall outside the scope of this theme are always welcome.

Deadline for submissions is 15 July 2008. Submissions may consist of papers, with optional supporting short compositions or excerpts, audio-visual documentation of performances and/or other aspects related to your submission that can be placed onto a DVD and the CUP website for “Organised Sound”. Supporting audio and audio-visual material will be presented as part of the journal's annual DVD-ROM which will appear with issue 14/3. SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 15 July 2008.

Notes for Contributors and further details can be obtained from the inside back cover of published issues of Organised Sound or from: http://www.journals.cambridge.org/oso

OPEN CALL: Mobile Music Workshop 08

The Mobile Music Workshop 2008 is the 5th in a series of annual international gatherings that explore the creative, critical and commercial potential of mobile music. They are inspired by the ever-changing social, geographic, ecological, emotional context of using mobile technology for creative ends. We are looking for new ideas and ground-breaking projects on sound in mobile contexts. What new forms of interaction with music and audio lie ahead as locative media, ubiquitous networks, and music access merge into new forms of experiences that shape the everyday? Can they change the way we think about our mobile devices and about walking through the city?

The emerging field of Mobile Music sits at the intersection of ubiquitous computing, portable audio technology and New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME). It goes beyond today's personal music players to include creative practices of mobile music making, sharing and mixing. The mobile setting challenges existing notions of interfaces and interaction, stretching music to new creative limits. The workshop has been at the forefront of this innovative area since 2004. Past editions of the event have taken place in Amsterdam, Brighton, Vancouver and Göteborg in collaboration with the Viktoria Institute, STEIM, Waag Society, Futuresonic, NIME and others.

The 2008 edition of the workshop will be held in Vienna, one of the hotspots in the European for laptop, glitch, and electronic music. Hosted by the University of Applied Arts, it will feature three evenings of performances and installations, an exhibition in the heart of the city, invited speakers, paper presentations, posters and demo sessions as well as hands-on tutorials. Besides the workshop proceedings, we will publish a catalogue that will gather key contributions from the last 5 years. We invite artists, designers, academic researchers, hackers, industry professionals and practitioners from all areas, including music, technology development, new media, sound-art, music distribution, cultural/media studies and locative media and more to present and discuss projects, prototypes, applications, devices, performances, installations, theoretical and historical considerations.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES

Submission deadline: 10 February 2008

Submission deadline for final papers: 14 April 2008

Papers

We invite submissions of workshop papers presenting new projects, approaches or reflections exploring the topic of mobile music. Potential submissions could include but are not limited to mobile music systems or enabling technologies, interface design, legal issues, user studies, ethnographic fieldwork, social implications, art pieces and other areas relevant to mobile music. OPEN CALL: Experiencing the War in Iraq

This multi-media art exhibition, curated by artists, will bring together diverse expressions of the War in Iraq, opening in several venues in Pawtucket and Providence, from March 5 to March 30, 2008. It will then travel to Fall River in April and to Boston in May. In these times of extreme political division and inadequate or biased media coverage, the exhibition will engage the American public in a broad-based dialogue that promotes awareness, understanding, and healing. Through the universal language of art, the exhibition seeks to give a human face to the complex conflict in Iraq and to engage those who have unconsciously cocooned themselves from the fearsome reality of the war. We ask the questions: What does it mean to experience this war firsthand, in combat, or as an Iraqi civilian? What does it mean to experience it from a distance, or on television? How can we in America reconnect to the reality of war? Are there shared visions of peace despite cultural and religious differences? The work will be selected purely on artistic merit and look to include as many perspectives as possible, beyond politics. The call goes out internationally to both soldiers and civilians for video, audio, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and the written word. The show will open simultaneously in the Arts Exchange (Pawtucket Armory), Machines With Magnets, Blackstone Valley Visitors Center, AS220 and the Cable Car Cinema, in Pawtucket and Providence, RI.

OPEN CALL: Proposals for projects at Gallery Skolska

DEAI/setkání Association hereby opens a call for submissions for proposals of individual or collective artistic exhibition projects for Gallery Školská 28 during the year 2008–9 and a call for submissions for project proposals for artist's residencies at Open Studios Prague Dolní Počernice, an international residency program for artists and theoreticians for the year 2008–09. Deadline for submissions is October 1, 2007.

The kind of proposals sought for exhibitions and residencies is fairly open in terms of theme, medium, and the activities involved in proposed projects. However, the proposal must take into account the technical and functional limitations of the space, as well make sense within the space's historical exhibition record and sensibilities. This call is open to both Czech and foreign artists. For projects where long-term preparation and studio space are required, it is possible to combine a Gallery Školská 28 exhibition with an Open Studios artist's residency.

Projects will be evaluated by a five-member panel that will include: Prof. Pavel Baňka; Prof. Miloš Šejn, PhD.; the artist Krištof Kintera; Školská curator Dana Recmanová; and one other member yet to be determined. Selected projects will be furnished with physical space and technical and administrative support, according to the needs of the project and its creator(s). Selected projects will be entered into the Program Plan for 2008-09, whose realization is contingent on the financial resources of the year-long program. The panel's selections will be announced on the web page www.skolska28.cz on November 30, 2007.

Submissions must include a brief description of the proposed project, information on the artist's previous work, including images or any other relevant documentation. In the case of artist's residencies, the artist's preferred time period and length of time for the residency should be included. Submissions may be personally delivered Wed.–Fri. from 1 to 5 p.m. to Communication space Školská 28; or by post to this address: O.S. DEAI/setkání (KP Školská 28), Dlouhá 33, 110 00 Praha 1, Czech Republic. Please clearly mark your parcel with the designation "2008." We do not accept proposals by e-mail. Your portfolio will be returned to you following the selection of projects, not later than the end of November. Please direct any questions concerning this call or the programs mentioned in it to Dana Recmanová by e-mail or personally by appointment. skolska28@skolska28.cz, tel. (+420) 731 150 179.

OPEN CALL: Eyebeam's Winter 2008 call for residents

Eyebeam is now accepting applications for Winter 2008 residencies. In addition to our preexistent residency program, this season we're very pleased to announce an additional opportunity for artist support: the inaugural Commission for Resident Artists, underwritten by Dewar's. Details about the commission, which will offer an additional subsidy to two residents a season, are detailed in a separate section below. The application deadline for the Winter 2008 residency season (which runs from January – June) is September 17, 2007. All applicants will be informed of their status by November 2007.

Eyebeam residencies support the creative research, production and presentation of initiatives that query art, technology and culture. The residency is a period of concentration and immersion in artistic investigation, daring research or experimental production of visionary expression, applications and projects. Past initiatives have ranged from moving image, sound and physical computing works to technical prototypes, installations and public interventions. The ideal resident will both contribute to and benefit from the collective environment at Eyebeam, and will embrace the spirit of openness shared across the organization: open source, open content and open distribution. Residents are encouraged to participate in public events including workshops, demonstrations of research in progress, panel discussions, and on-line releases, in addition to regularly scheduled open studio events. Therefore, we do ask that artists include in their proposal examples of how they might like to contribute to Eyebeam's public programming. The program term is from January to June with the potential for extension and/or re-application. Residents will be selected from an open call, based on the quality of the work or research being proposed, the availability of the necessary tools and skills to support the work, and in consideration of the overarching research themes and activities of the organization.

Eyebeam's research themes bring together creative practitioners and expert external participants to develop new research leading to possible public outcomes including seminars, public discussion and exhibition. Research themes for 2008 include (though will not be limited to):
Energy, Technology and Sustainability
Urban research, urban interventions and media in public space
Artists and creative technologists interested in these research areas are particularly encouraged to apply for residencies.

Residencies include:
$5,000 honorarium
24/7 access to Eyebeam's Chelsea facility in New York City, including equipment and technical expertise from Eyebeam staff and Fellows. The potential for collaborative exchange with other residents and Eyebeam fellows, as well as support from interns Residents are encouraged to work onsite at Eyebeam for as much of their residency as possible, in order to both contribute to and gain from the collective, collaborative context of the labs. International applicants are welcome to apply, though Eyebeam will not cover additional travel or accommodation expenses. We are, however, happy to work with selected applicants, to help them to secure funds to cover these expenses. International residents are responsible for securing their own visas for the residency period. International applicants are encouraged to apply now for Summer 2008 residencies. Up to three residencies will be offered in Winter 2008.
