OPEN CALL: Giant Ear)))_Fantastic Places

Sound designers and sound artists are often asked to create realistic sonic environments for places that they've never experienced. This requires some serious shapeshifting and mindbending skills. For this month's Giant Ear))) we would like to celebrate these skills by requesting the truly fantastical. Please send in: (Option 1) A piece composed for a place that you may never be able to go to physically as a person. Altering the sound to convince listeners of the place is encouraged. Or (Option 2) Send in a recording/composition of yourself actually in an actual fantastic place. Fantastic! Please send your field-recording based work as an MP3 (via e-mail, FTP or www.sendspace.com) to Andrea Williams at lemurz66@yahoo.com By April 2, 2009. "Fantastic Places," hosted by Andrea Williams and Edmund Mooney, will be webcast on free103point9 Online Radio 7-9 p.m. in April on Sunday (date TBA). Giant Ear))) is the New York Society for Acoustic Ecology's weekly, two-hour radio show webcasting recordings of the NYC soundscape, (wo)man-on-the-street public interest interviews, live on-site sound explorations, special guests, and more. New show updated each month, show airs weekly Sundays at 7 p.m.

Ecotone Radio

A new program debuts today (Thursdays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.) on free103- point9 Online Radio from DJ Pause called "Ecotone Radio." An ecotone is the transitional area between two different ecosystems. Its the place where grassland becomes dune, jungle becomes desert, city becomes suburb. An ecotone can be a slow crossfade or a jagged splice. Ecotone radio seeks to explore the overlaps and disjunctions between competing musical ecosystems, the dialouges, wars, orgies, transmigrations, spats, group meditations, flash floods, reincarnations, and identity crisises that happen when different spheres of activity meet each other. Covering genres as broad as reggae, bassline, dub, dancehall, cosmic jazz, ragga, reggaeton, ragga-jungle, calypso, kwaito, dub-step, minimal, kuduro, electroacoustic, down-tempo, highlife, ambient, manzuma, hiplife, noise, hiphop, grime, breaks, bass, IDM, post punk, steppers, gnawa, bhangra, qawalli, free jazz, garage, soul jazz, soca, free improv, microhouse, two-step, cumbia, ghetto tech, kwela, hyphy, soul, breakcore, maghrebi, electro, and countless others that have yet to be imagined. We will use the zero-sum solution of the dj mixer to examine how musical ideas are mashed up and reinterperated through post-colonial cultural transmission, and geographic and sonic overlap.

New free103point9 website

The new free103point9 web site is up now. We're sure there are still some kinks to be worked out, but there's also many new features that are working fine. Lots of new audio and video files of past events, made possible, in part, through a Digitization grant administered by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. You can also add your event to the calendar, to get listed among many other great radio art and experimental events from around the world. Please let us know if anything doesn't work in the comments.
