WGXC special announcement

Dear WGXC community members,

Over the last few months, we’ve been working tirelessly producing benefit events and preparing for the launch of WGXC’s FM signal on 90.7-FM later this year. Please see below for an exciting announcement regarding Prometheus Radio Project (a Philadelphia-based group that helps community stations like ours) who will help get WGXC on the air this September.

Urgently, however, we now need to ask you directly for your financial help.

PLEASE HELP WGXC RAISE 5,000 IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.

As publicized, WGXC received a large matching grant from the US Department of Commerce to purchase the equipment (transmitter, antenna, etc) needed to get the WGXC-FM signal on the air. We must match this grant. Fundraising at the community level will demonstrate that we have local support for this effort that will sustain WGXC into the future. We’ve secured the means to extend our fundraising efforts towards the match into the summer, but WE MUST RAISE 5,000 IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.

We are asking you to dig as deeply as you can to ensure that WGXC stays on track and can meet our matching deadline. If you are not yet a member, please consider becoming one at the highest level possible. If you are already a member, thank you, and we hope you’ll consider increasing your membership to the next level.

Founding member levels:

· ELECTRODES = 1 watt ($25 - 49)
· CAPACITORS = 2-4 watts ($50 - 124)
· CIRCUITS = 5-9 watts ($125 - 249)
· TRANSISTORS = 10 - 20 watts ($250 - 524)
· TOWERS = 21 - 40 watts ($525 - 1,024)

WGXC "Radio, Radio" DJ dance party

The Magic Stranger, Tony Fletcher, DJ John Deux, The NRG People/Male Room, DJ Sam, DJ Dizzy, and more, 9 p.m. Feb. 27 in Catskill, in the empty storefront where the Muddy Cup coffee house used to be on Main St.

This led to Fletcher presenting TV programmes and networking with numerous post-punk figures including Paul Weller and Echo & the Bunnymen, the latter of which were the subject of his first book published in 1987. He has two children and is married to Posie. Fletcher then juggled band and record label management before moving to New York in the late 80s, where he also became involved with DJing, club promotion and music industry consultant. His first novel, Hedonism, was published in 2003. http://www.ijamming.net/

About Hans Tammen's Endangered Guitar
In hundreds of solo performances since 1993, New York-based Hans Tammen has explored the sounds of concert halls and small clubs with an assortment of mechanical contrivances applied to his modified "endangered" guitars, interactive software programming, and stereo and multichannel sound systems. His music has been described as an alien world of bizarre textures and a journey through the land of unending sonic operations.

His instrument is a hybrid between a guitar and a computer, designed to react with the resonant frequencies of the room. It constantly records his sounds, and the information from the analysis of these sounds and the playing determines a wide variety of processes. This makes every performance a site-specific one, bringing the sonic qualities of the surrounding conditions to the listener's attention. www.tammen.org

Macchiato Mondays at Swallow for WGXC

Stop by Swallow in Hudson any Monday this month (including today) and buy a Macchiato drink, and all proceeds go to WGXC and bringing community radio to Columbia and Greene counties. Swallow is at 433 Warren St. in Hudson and opened in August. Owned by Aaron and Sarah Dibben, Rural Intelligence says, "Every week Swallow offers a featured coffee, in addition to their stand-by beans from Intelligensia, the legendary Chicago chain, now also in L.A. Intelligensia’s coffee buyers are a step ahead of Fair Trade, working directly with farmers in Africa and Latin America, visiting each, on average, three times a year, building trust and relationships and sharing with the farmers the best practices they’ve picked up from producers around the world. They reward the resulting superior crops by paying 25% more than the farmer would normally get from an exporter or other middleman."

I "heart" WGXC

Feb. 6, 2010: 11 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

at Sorted
357 Warren St., Hudson, NY 12534

Spend Saturday, February 6th with WGXC at Sorted: Shopping, Sounds, and Cider

free admission

Organized by Elizabeth Powell, this WGXC benefit event will feature goods made by local artisans such as leather bags, clothing, tabletop design, and other multiples and one-of-a-kind objects. Sound artist Hans Tammen will perform his "Endangered Guitar" throughout the day, culminating in a performance at 6 p.m. Just in time for Valentines day, proceeds from I "heart" WGXC will go towards acquiring the equipment needed to launch WGXC's FM signal on 90.7.

WGXC is a community-run media project, re-envisioning radio as an innovative platform for local participation. Our inclusive programming connects diverse voices, and distributes information across the public spectrum in New York's Greene and Columbia counties. This multi-faceted project will be much more than just a radio station. With studios in Catskill and Hudson, WGXC activities will include special exhibitions and events, workshops and media training for youth and adults, a news blog with writing and photography, and a local calendar of events, meetings, and other resources.

WGXC volunteers are working hard to launch a 3,300-watt community radio station. More than 78,000 people throughout Greene and Columbia counties will be able to receive the signal on 90.7-FM. WGXC received its license from the FCC and a grant from the US Commerce Dept that will cover 50 percent of our equipment needs. We now need to raise matching funds in order to get on the air. Join us on February 6th and help launch WGXC-FM.

WGXC's New year's Masquerade Ball

ABOUT THE SOME OF THE PERFORMERS/PERFORMANCES AT WGXC'S NEW YEAR'S MASQUERADE BALL

Mother Fletcher is a rhythmic Hudson-based band.

Saber Coup is a Hudson-based rock 'n' roll band.

Young Paris is a Hudson-based hip hop performer who will perform with Saber Coup at this event.

Bella's Bartok Western Massachusetts' premier Acoustic Gypsy Punk Circus Band, and sometimes Western Massachusetts's premier Gypsy Balkan Rockabilly Fusion Party in a Box (just squeeze).

Diata Diata The Percussion Ensemble of Diata Diata International Folkloric Theatre is led by husband and wife team André and Pamela Badila, accompanied by their children, who were raised on the stage in New York and France. Founded in 1985, Diata Diata presents folkloric dance of ancestral Africa as international theatre, including wildly popular performances at Hudson schools.

Hudson City Ramblers The Hudson City Ramblers were born on a winter night in Columbia County when slap bassist Mikey "Chops" LeConte invited Slink Moss to perform at a benefit at the Taconic Wayside Inn in Copake, New York. Slink Moss brought Aigars Kildiss and Joe Lucas from the Slink Moss East Coast Band and they jammed wildcat rockabilly with the house band.

Rob Hervey of Saugerties has been studying didjeridoo since 1996 and plays the Australian instrument through a variety of effects.

Ryder Cooley is an inter-disciplinary artist, performer and musician. She will perform aeriel dances several times throughout this event.

Jackie Thomas is a Hudson-based DJ who has spun on WBCR (Great Barrington), and at many events in Hudson and NYC.

He has worked as project architect with Asymptote for clients including the New York Stock Exchange, Documenta XI, BMW Headquarters, The Guggenheim Virtual Museum, and Carlos Meile. He will DJ at this event, international psychedelic music from 1969.

Jim McCabe is a Columbia County resident who will DJ at this event.

Liv Carrow is a Hudson-based guitarist.

The Lottery at Hudson is a fictional work/radio play by Norman Douglas that uses the radio documentary format familiar to listeners of National Public Radio. Stylistic paradigms can be found in such programs as Joe Frank (now in reruns on WNYC AM Sunday nights at 11, wnyc.org), WBEZ's This American Life, WNYC's RadioLab, and even a few podcasts like the memory palace. "The Lottery at Hudson" is the small but intricately woven story of how a humble community of approximately 7500 souls living alongside the banks of upstate New York's mid-Hudson River transforms itself into a functioning utopia of sorts. What sort of utopia seems to have arisen largely from the appeal of one person's singular perspective, a multifaceted vision culled from various sources that an otherwise unremarkable teacher and student of history has stumbled across during his twenty-odd years of service in the field of public education.
